The Woodland Heritage Festival returned to Ecclesall Woods on 12 May 2019!
It was a perfect day with over 450 people visiting the woods for lots of activities, workshops, and even wood-fired pizza. There was a working Bronze Age-style copper smelt that successfully cast some beautiful copper objects, and visitors had the opportunity to decorate their own copper necklaces.
Over in Prehistoric Park, visitors could try cave painting or making their own coil pots, while experts in zooarchaeology and osteology revealed the secrets behind researching bone. Heritage Doncaster and The Time Travellers showed fascinating artefacts from the local area, while the Wincobank Hill Brigantes demonstrated their Iron Age fighting skills, and Dr Toby Pillatt led tours of the wood’s historic Q-pits.
The festival was funded through the University of Sheffield’s Higher Education Initiative Fund and Widening Participation Fund and was organised entirely by a team of department researchers, students, and associates, led by PhD researcher Cait Scott.
